It’s easy to forget that the rest of the world doesn’t always share your unique perspective on…well, pretty much everything. Just the other day, I made an unconscious assumption about something and realized that my ‘normal’ isn't everyone’s ‘normal’. The things I value and expect aren’t necessarily (sometimes, hardly ever) the things other people value and respect.
Because we are raised in a culture that focuses so much on the future, goals, success, etc., for most people being ‘present’ and focusing on living each moment to the fullest is not the norm. That’s one of the reasons it’s easy to take things and people for granted. When our attention is way down the road, we assume that what’s happening here and now will stay constant. We often forget life is fragile and that change – big and small – can happen in an instant.
Life takes place in the moments in between our big goals and future plans. It’s when we’re not paying attention to now, when we’re not ‘present’ that people, circumstances and things get taken for granted. The past is gone and the future has yet to happen – it’s in the present that all of your power and bliss exists.
